Status update: forums, guest writers and more

Posted 27/7/08 - Filed under Announcements - 22 comments

Hey everyone

The site has been online for about a month now and I’m considering expanding it! I’ve been playing with the idea to set up forums, so you could simply post there whenever you’d need help. I’d also add a marketplace since I know some people would find these useful.

I know the WordPress forums exist, but I thought it might be a fun addition to the site. What’s your opinion? Post in the comments and if I get sufficient response, I’ll set up the forums.

I’m also looking for a couple of (guest) writers. I love writing about WordPress but unfortunately, my time is limited, so I can’t give you daily updates. I’d be happy if some people could send in some articles. Obviously, I’d compensate them for their time spent on the articles.

Other than that, I’m working on various other smaller things who will hopefully make this place even more interesting.

Stay tuned and don’t forget to voice your opinion!

Separating comments, trackbacks and pingbacks

You’ve all seen it: comments that aren’t actually comments but simply trackbacks or pingbacks from other blogs linking to your blog posts. The downside is that any interesting conversation going on in your comments is abruptly stopped. Suddenly your comments are clutted with trackbacks and people don’t bother to read everything to ensure they missed something. Continue reading …

WordPress Admin Bar

Some people have these plugins that they just can’t live without. The WordPress Admin Bar is such a plugin for me. The author’s description:

This plugin creates an admin bar at the top of your site for logged in users (i.e. you) based on the design of the admin bar located at WordPress.com. It has links to all popular areas of the admin area, saving you time.

It requires no theme editing whatsoever — just upload and activate and you’re done.

Hey

I usually just post this in our Asides category but I think this deserved more exposure. DBS Interactive has written/copied the WordPress codex on template tags into one easy to use page that acts as a one-stop-resource for all your template tags.

Have a look here. It’s definately worthy of bookmarking.

During a job which involved skinning WordPress µ I did recently, my client asked me if it was possible if I could add a link to their support forum. As usual, I said I’d find a solution. Continue reading …

Highlighting comments by the post author

By using this little snippet of code, you can add a specific css class to a comment being made by the author, as demonstrated on blogs such as Veerle’s, a fellow Belgian! By using this technique, you make sure that people notice it when you add something or address a remark. Continue reading …
